OK, what time is it? The heat is gone. The pools are closed. School is back in session. White shoes are out. The Huskers are back. Any ideas? It’s fall, no doubt, and the leaves will soon be on the ground and the snow will soon be falling. But fall also marks more than the just the afore mentioned items – it’s also the time when the visual and performing art communities really hit their stride for the year.

And this year is looking pretty good.

Two things you won’t want to miss are Neil Young with Death Cab For Cutie Nov. 5 at the Qwest Center and the Diego Rivera exhibit that opens Oct. 25 at the Joslyn. Oh, and don’t miss David Byrne at the Holland Center on Oct. 17 and Opera Omaha’s take on “The Pirates of Penzance” Oct. 15, 17 and 19. Then what about River City Round up next weekend and the opening of the area’s pumpkin patches? Yikes, that makes six things to “not miss.” Some of these things appeal to certain types of people more than others, but with Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots coming through the area as well, along with a new season of “The Met Live in HD” at both Film Streams and the Ross, it’s safe to say that there is indeed something for everyone. And if all these things fail to please, there’s always football.

Indie films coming this fall/winter

Omaha and Lincoln have been fortunate when it comes to opportunities to see independent and art and foreign films and documentaries on the big screen. This fall and winter there will be an array of special film events at local theaters and schools.

In the O

In Omaha, we have the much-ballyhooed non-profit Film Streams/Ruth Sokolof Theater, a two-screen space that opened last year in the arts-friendly NoDo area of downtown.

We also have the Dundee Theatre in midtown, a classic, old-school one-screener that opened in 1925 originally as a live stage for vaudeville acts. It now also shows indie films. Beginning Friday, Dundee will show “In Search of a Midnight Kiss,” and beginning Sept. 26, Dundee will offer “Choke.” For screen times and more information on the films, go to dundeetheatre.com.

Omaha also sees special film series at the area’s colleges, including Metropolitan Community College’s third annual Diversity Matters Film and Lecture Series, which kicks off on Monday. The series explores a variety of diverse cultures through film and lecture, and is free and open to the public. Find the schedule of films and lectures at mccneb.edu.

In the L

Also beginning Monday, Sept. 22, is the “The Met: Live in HD” – the Metropolitan Opera’s live transmissions in movie theaters around the world – which kicks off on Monday at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center in Lincoln, as well as at Film Streams in Omaha. Long before Omaha Film Streams came along, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Ross Theater was screening indie and foreign films.

Among the films in the “Met” series this fall will be “Salmone,” “Doctor Atomic,” “Le Damnation de Faust,” “Thais,” “La Rondine” and “Lucia di Lammermoor.” You can find show times and info about the films at filmstreams.org or theross.org.

In addition to the “Met” series, UNL’s Ross will screen these films this fall/winter:

“Tell No One” (Sept. 26-Oct.9)

“In Search of a Midnight Kiss” (Oct. 10-16)

“Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts” (Oct. 10-16)

“Trumbo” (Oct. 17-23)

“Elegy” (Oct. 31-Nov. 13)

“I Served the King of England” (Oct. 31-Nov. 13)

Fall at the Film Streams

In addition to the “Met” series, Omaha’s Film Streams has plenty of other films and series’ this season. The theater just began “Cinemateca,” a new repertory series intended to bring some of the best Latino, Latin American and Spanish films ever made to Omaha. It will feature 10 films from six different countries, with post-show discussions occurring every Tuesday evening throughout the series, which goes through Oct. 2.

Among the films in the series are: “Orfeu Negro” (Black Orpheus); “Muerte de un ciclista” (Death of a Cyclist); “Las madres de la Plaza de Mayo” (Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo); “La historia official” (The Official Story); “CrÃa Cuervos” (Raise Ravens) and “La misma luna” (Under the Same Moon).

In addition to their special series’, Film Streams will screen the following films:

“Man on A Wire” (Sept. 19-Oct. 2)

“Tell No One” (Oct. 3-16)

“Trouble the Water” (Oct. 17-23)

For screen times and info on the films, go to filmstreams.org. You can also find descriptions of the films each week in the City Weekly (this week, page 69).

This fall and through December, the Henry Doorly Zoo will feature three IMAX films in their IMAX theater. The three showing are: “Wild Ocean 3D: Where Africa Meets the Sea,” “Dolphins and Whales 3D: Tribes of the Ocean” and “Sea Monsters 3D.”

Family fun this fall and winter

There’s plenty of family friendly activities to attend this fall and winter, too. From pumpkin patches to children’s plays to next week’s River City Roundup, there are plenty of options for the whole family.

Round ‘em up!

The annual River City Roundup begins next week, on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Qwest Center. The four-day event includes a diverse offering of entertainment and family fun. The staple of events include the Ak-Sar-Ben Rodeo, the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Livestock Exposition and the Douglas County Fair.

In addition, numerous events like the Heritage Parade, Trail Rides, Giddy-Up Gulch and the Nebraska Beef Council’s “What’s for Dinner” Cooking Stage are all part of the festivities.

In addition to pumpkins galore, a massive corn maze and a haunted house, Vala’s offers live musical performances, funnel cakes, the ever-popular Pigtucky Derby Pig Races, as well as donkeys and goats and rabbits and horses and tricycles and a course.

Down near B-Town there is the oft-visited Bellevue Berry & Pumpkin Ranch, 11001 S. 48th St., Papillion. Take a hayrack ride through a haunted forest to the pumpkin patch and check out the “Ranch of Terror,” with a haunted house and haunted hayrack rides.

The Bellevue Berry Farm is also home to great western grub featuring Cowboy Ed’s famous barbeque beef, pork, grilled chicken and smoked turkey. There is great ranch fun to be had with campfires, volleyball, horseshoes and children’s play areas. And pumpkins. Pumpkins, pumpkins!
