Last week I alluded to all of the big local shows that are going to be taking place during the second half of November. In the next few weeks there will be six major CD release parties, the inevitable Thanksgiving deluge of veteran bands coming out for the holiday, a couple of fun dance parties, a major music showcase, and one show where they will celebrate a local musician taking his place in the Guinness Book of World Records. It won’t be for longest drum solo, guitar with the most necks, or the world’s smartest bass player. No one really cares about those things. Instead, Filthy Few guitarist Eric Hahn will secure the rights to having the worlds tallest mohawk on Friday, Nov. 14. Hahn has told me that the current world record is held by a German who grew one to 61 centimeters, or just over 24 inches. Hahn will not divulge the exact length that he is shooting for. The festivities will start with a press conference at 10 a.m. at the Capital School of Hairstyling, where the record will be officially recorded.

That evening at the Waiting Room a benefit show will take place for Locks Of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term hair loss due to medical diagnosis. Hahn’s hair will also be donated to the cause. Project Nightlights, a group that creates dream bedrooms to provide hope and healing for children, will also be a beneficiary of the show. The show will feature Hahn’s band the Filthy Few performing their final show on this night. The trash-a-billy band is calling it a day after entertaining and sometimes scaring music fans for many years now. The benefit will also feature reunited ‘80s Omaha punk band Cordial Spew, Bloodcow, Motley Crue tribute band Livewire, and Social Distortion tribute band Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.

Omaha singer-songwriter Monica Eby will be unleashing her first album of new material in five years this Saturday (Nov. 15) at the Waiting Room. Eby and her band perform original material that blurs between rock, country and blues. A staple on the regional festival circuit along with constant gigs at many of Omaha’s finest venues has established Eby as one of the top adult independent acts in the area. Eby’s new album, “Sinners Delight,” follows her 2003 debut “I Can’t Wait.”

“I Can’t Wait” was a top seller in Omaha and garnered the artist much press and some radio airplay as well. Monica’s songwriting style has always been introspective and personal and in recent times she has also written about her take on issues happening around us including a tribute to the troops entitled “Welcome Home” and “Madison & Mission” about a police officer who died in the line of duty. The Monica Eby Band’s live shows are always full of energy and a lot of personality and feature top notch musicians including her husband Todd Eby on drums, Cody Valasic on bass, and Bill Roundtree on guitar. Eby had one of her most notable performances to date last year when she was asked to open for Chris Issak at the Stir Concert Cove. Monica brings out two heavy hitters, Brad Hoshaw and the Seven Deadlies and Sarah Benck and the Robbers to support her and the band on Saturday. She is also promising some special guests and surprises on the Waiting Room stage during her performance.
