‘Grand Theft Auto’ franchise provides a nice little

“The Lost and Damned” is simply a present from Rockstar. Released nearly a year after “Grand Theft Auto IV,” this expansion provides those who haven’t played the original game for months a great reason to dive back into the carnage of Liberty City.
You play the role of Johnny Klebitz, vice president of the Lost Motorcycle Club. Veterans of the game will recognize “The Lost” from Nico Bellic’s adventures in Liberty City. Indeed, the two character’s tales intertwine at times, and they actually work together on a couple of missions involving black market transactions gone bad. The intersection of the concurrent storylines makes Liberty City seem all the more alive and vibrant, while giving you an opportunity to experience the game’s missions through a different lens.
The Lost’s clubhouse is located in Alderney, the island on the left side of the map that is supposed to represent New Jersey. If you were one of those people that stopped “Grand Theft Auto IV” before unlocking all the areas this means you’ve got an entirely new map to play around on.
If you’re familiar with “Grand Theft Auto” then you should understand what you’re getting into with this game. It doesn’t deviate from the proven formula of allowing you free reign through an open environment with a massive arsenal of weapons. The missions are the standard fare that generally have you chasing down a rival group of criminals and killing them, stealing things and escaping from the cops.
The storyline is good enough to keep you engaged, and it really soars at the points where it intersects the main story. The leader of the Lost, Billy Grey, is released from incarceration at the beginning of the game. Grey’s return irks Klebitz, who thinks Grey is becoming power hungry and reckless. The two eventually have a falling out, but not before instigating a war with rival motorcycle gang, the Angels of Death.
Controlling your character in third person view remains twitchy, but adequate. The controls really shine when it comes to riding the new motorcycles. Since Klebitz is a biker, it only makes sense that he should have less trouble handling his bike compared to Bellic. The improved handling and physics allows you to burn through the streets of Liberty City at mind-numbing speeds, without fear that a tiny bump in the road or a small collision should send you flying. They are so much fun to drive you will never find yourself willingly behind the wheel of a car.
The game gets extra bad-ass points when you ride with your Lost brethren. The sight of a pack of motorcycles cruising in formation is amazing. Whereas Bellic was almost always alone in “GTA IV,” Klebitz’s friends are only a phone call away and more than willing to join in the mayhem.
To complement the biker theme, Rockstar grittied up the menu text and colors. The entire game is presented through a filter that makes the video grainy and the colors less saturated. This filter effect creates a rough ambiance that feels like watching a video from the 1970s.
In the original game Bellic was often accosted by his friends to go bowling, play pool or visit the strip club. This broke the flow of the game, and could be an example of the developers trying to lengthen the game by adding these fluff assignments. Of course they weren’t mandatory, but getting in Bellic’s friends’ good graces was the only way you could unlock perks, such as being able to purchase weapons at a discount or getting free cab rides around the city.
Luckily those have fallen by the wayside in “The Lost and Damned.” Since Klebitz is already established as part of a criminal fraternity he can call his brothers should he need weapons, a new bike or even backup on a mission. This removes the frustration and allows you to jump in the game running without the need to unlock these features.
In addition to story missions, Klebitz can also participate in Road Rash-style street races, hunt down and battle rival gangs in the streets, steal bikes for export and take care of a crooked politician’s dirty laundry. Although repetitive, these side missions keep delivering the fun and offer small bits of gameplay to break up the story missions.
And then you have new weapons, vehicles and radio, Internet and television content that just pads the package. The new weapons – which includes automatic and sawed off shotguns, a grenade launcher and automatic pistol – give you a lot of firepower to play with. In addition, the download also has several new biker-themed multiplayer modes. One named Chopper vs. Chopper has two players playing cat and mouse with a bike and military helicopter.
Rockstar has a reputation for generating controversy to get free press to help sell their games. This game is no different. It is brutal ... I’m thinking of one cutscene in particular, which involves one of your fellow Lost members, a chair, some rope and a blow torch. This time the controversy-generator was the inclusion of full frontal male nudity. While gratuitous, those who appreciate the satirical humor of Rockstar’s flagship series will no doubt chuckle at the inclusion of this nudity designed to appall conservative sensibilities.
For the most part I approach downloadable content with my bullsh*t sensor on high. It’s value can seem dubious. Sometimes it seems as if developers intentionally leave things out of a game with hopes of selling it to you later. Other times the additions are too short on content and fun to warrant laying down the additional dough.
It’s a wonderful relief to see one of the top developers set new standards for downloadable content. With 10 to 20 hours of additional game play, “The Lost and Damned” does more than add to the original game, it is a whole new game in itself.
“The Lost and Damned” is so jam-packed with content it is well worth the $20 price tag. This is especially relevant during times like these when people are trying to watch their pennies.
But the most exciting thing about “The Lost and Damned” is the possibilities for future excursions into Liberty City. Rockstar calls it the “first episode of downloadable content,” which implies similar content is on its way. Future games could include journeys in the shoes of a grunt working for one of the mafia families, or a foot soldier for the Asian Triad gang or the Jamaican Hillside Gang.
There are still a lot of stories to be told in Liberty City. Releasing downloadable expansions is a great way for Rockstar to capitalize on the detail they put into creating such a believable game world while still making it affordable for the gamers.

The inside is very plush, my feet even feel close to sweating when the air con is up and the house is warm.
