“Halo Wars” is a prequel to the best-selling Halo series, set about 20 years before the events of the trilogy that redefined first-person shooters. “Halo Wars” hopes to do the same for real-time strategies, a genre that has had a difficult time translating from the PC to gaming consoles. Ensemble is largely successful translating the RTS gameplay to the console, but the result can be better described as RTS-lite.
All of the elements of a real-time strategy game are there. You build a base and amass resources to spend on a massive army used to take out the enemy. But the strategy side of the equation is not extraordinarily deep. Sure ... all the units have a rock-paper-scissors system of strengths and vulnerabilities against other units, but with controller’s limitations in precisely selecting and controlling said units, it can be difficult to take advantage of strategic mismatches. More often than not the strategy that works involves maxing out your unit cap with the most powerful units available and marching the entire army across the screen to assault your enemy’s base.
The single-player campaign is relatively short, yet satisfying. The story is mainly presented through excellent, cinematic-quality cut scenes that go a long way to pull you into the “Halo” universe. It’s tough to not feel excited watching Spartan soldiers tangle with Covenant Elite troops for the fate of humanity. The story itself, however, is somewhat muddled and confusing. It jumps around, and its not until the game is 80 percent completed that it starts to get interesting. But the elements of a “Halo” story are there; humanity is saved from extermination at the hands of a theocratic alien race by the bravery and skill of its elite soldiers.
Much like the other installments in the “Halo” series, “Halo Wars” really shines when it comes to multiplayer. It is here where you will find the “replay-ability” value, and it is here where strategy is the deepest. Do you expand quickly, or focus on building an army? Do you fill your base with supply pads to collect resources, or do you build advanced production facilities? Do you quickly rush the enemy unawares, or do you focus on upgrading your troops? Do you amass many inexpensive units, or invest in building a few uber units? Without the luxury of time that exists in the single player campaign, these are the types of decisions that will decide your fate in multiplayer skirmishes.
The control scheme has always been a barrier to entry for RTS games on consoles. To overcome this Ensemble developed Halo Wars from the ground up to be controlled with a gamepad, an effort which has resulted in as good a replacement for the keyboard and mouse as possible. Pressing the directional pad will cycle through your bases, armies and notifications. Most units have a special attack mapped to the Y button in addition to their regular attack.
The world of “Halo” is excellently represented in “Halo Wars.” Fans of the series should get a kick out of commanding familiar units in colorful and exciting terrain. When armies collide the action is chaotic. The camera can be frustrating, as you cannot zoom into the action close enough to fully appreciate the detail, while at the same time you cannot zoom out far enough to give a real strategic view of the battlefield.
The fog of war helps add challenge to the game, but also detracts from the believability. You mean to tell me that the human forces have a giant star ship orbiting the planet, one that can decimate enemies with a laser beam, but it can’t see the entire battlefield and transmit enemy troop information to the forces on the ground? The United States military can do that right now, why wouldn’t they be able to do this 500 years in the future?
“Halo Wars” was the last call for Ensemble Studios, a developer most known for its “Age of Empires” series. Microsoft disbanded the company shortly after “Halo Wars” was released. While it is a shame to see such an accomplished developer leave the game, their ability to bring the world of “Halo” to life in a genre-crossing game that defies institutional wisdom on what can be done on a console deserves a round of applause. “Halo Wars” is a successful experiment that will undoubtedly be copied by other developers to open up the potential of home gaming consoles.
