If one wants to argue the merits of open mike nights, one listen to Platte River Rain should provide ample ammunition for those on the side of cultivating unknown raw talent. Singer-songwriter Ashley Rayne Boe was prodded into playing the now-defunct Molly’s open mike night by host and local songwriter John Henry a little over two years ago. The audience, which included myself at many of these events, saw her potential and immediately recognized her fantastic natural voice.

With much encouragement, Ashley continued to play these nights and eventually decided to take it to another level. She filtered through many responses from her Craigslist ad and ended up jamming with Omaha music veteran George Prescott. This proved to be a musical match and the duo found themselves on many local and regional stages over the following months. When it came time to add a third, a strange event at the Barley Street Tavern, found them face to face with B. Anthony Esq., a witty southern transplant from Baton Rouge, ended up the final piece in Platte River Rain’s game plan. The trio has continued to play a seemingly never ending schedule and that hard work has translated to a distribution deal with a Phoenix-based label called Dekka. The band is currently recording their first full-length record at Grasshopper Takeover front man Curtis Grubb’s Grubb Inc. studio. The band referenced themselves as emotional folk music many times during our sit down at Burke’s Pub this past week, but after some debate that label becomes less set in stone.

How did you come together as a group?
Ashley: I used to write alone in my living room and one day I ran into John Henry and he brought me out to Molly’s for their open mike night. They were really supportive so I took out a Craigslist ad and I met with a few people. Prescott was really professional. He showed up to jam with a kitten, a jar of homemade pickles, a bag of chocolate, an ADAT machine, and a guitar and we have been playing every since.

How about B. Anthony?
Ashley: When I put out that ad he also answered it, but I blew him off.
B. Anthony: It had something to do with the pix get a response or something like that.
Ashley: No, you had e-mailed about being in a Christian rap act.
B. Anthony: Well, that is an inside story with me and Christians.
Ashley: He was at the Barley Street taking pictures of Spiders For Love and George had passed out in his chair. I started yelling for people to call 911. Brian was there taking his pulse and keeping a watchful eye on him.
Anthony: I was going to take his wallet.
Ashley: No, he is a nurse. He wrote us a couple days later to ask how George was working out. We started hanging out and jamming and he stayed in the group, where other people did not stay in.

What had happened to you George?
George Prescott: I had worked an 18-hour day, hadn’t slept for two days or ate much and passed out from low blood sugar.
Ashley: Everyone there was our friend and drunk and not paying attention, but B. did. He is our family.

When did you move here from Baton Rouge, and did you play music when you were there?
Anthony: I came up here five years ago. I played rock and zydeco. That is what sells. Actually I don’t think we played anything really except “Brown Eyed Girl.”

What was the catalyst for taking the project to the next level?
Ashley: For us it just happened. It was just natural. I ended up being divorced and a huge part of it was me wanting to make music. It’s a huge passion. We never decided that it was going to be something professional, we just ended up doing it.

How would you describe your sound and would you say that you play music within a genre?
Ashley: I think one of the things that is unique to our music is that while I write a lot of the melodies and rhythms they write something totally new over it. It’s like a polyrhythm and everyone has a real individual stake in the songs.
Anthony: Everyone can play what they hear. You don’t have to worry so much about what it’s supposed to fit into. It’s about what you feel.

Will you be touring for this album?
Ashley: We are contracted for a tour. So we will be doing a 25- date tour. We would like to play more regional shows and cut back on local shows. We are one of the more busy bands in town; we are playing once or twice a week right now. We have had shows offered everywhere. We are really excited about the international release.

A lot of folk and roots artists seem to do very well touring in Europe and in other areas.
Anthony: I think as far as getting a crowd in Europe, I think that translates into people wanting something authentic. I think they are like everyone else and they may be interested in the American version.
Ashley: I don’t like that classification, Americana. I think there is more of an international folk music sound. Folk music usually can be categorized by its region, but now the culture of the world is more of a global thing. There is more communication and folk music is just really emotional music and it is a new sound coming out of everywhere and it’s not just a cultural thing anymore.

Who are some bands around town that you like to play with?
George: My favorite people to play with are people who have never played on stage before. We like to talk people into getting on stage to play.
Ashley: That is because a lot of people did that for us.

It seems as if the band and your songwriting have evolved quickly from the first couple of times I saw you at open mike nights.
Ashley: I am a quick learner. I strive everyday to be more free as a songwriter. I was a classical musician so every time I write something or play something I try not to restrict myself. I think George ads an amazing aspect to a lot of this music. Like the song “Hippos.” I was like, “this is cute, but I will never play this.” Then he writes some amazing lines to the song and now it’s really organic. Then Brian came along and makes sure we practice and makes us tight.
Anthony: I am not making you goosestep around or anything.
George: We have to clear everything through corporate. What made us evolve the way we did is that instead of going for a unique sound with this kind of guitar or this kind of odd instrument, we are just trying to create something new with just acoustic instruments. We can go through the whole night with just three instruments and three voices.

What is your take on the Omaha music scene in general?
Ashley: I think some people should come down the Benson strip and start handing out record contracts. There are so many good songwriters out here. There is a lot of community in this scene.
Anthony: I think one of the best things about a music scene is the ability to have one.
