Don't forget the library

Now that film streams is bringing Omaha the broad selection in art, foreign and documentary films that a metro area of almost a million people, with two major universities, deserves – we have ready exposure to the avant-garde films of the day. But what about the avant-garde films of yesteryear? I’m old enough to remember the “nouvelle vogue” movies from France in the ’60s and ‘70s, the Fassbinder films of the ‘80s, the long trail of Woody Allen movies, the stunning works of Ingmar Bergman – which emerged in the ‘50s, the wonderful movies of Fellini and Kurosawa, and of the Italian neo-realists. How do they stand up to review 30 or 40 years later?

Being on a movie tear now for months, thanks to Facets and Netflix rentals, I’ve been able to take second or third looks at movies I saw initially 30 years ago or more – and the results are interesting. Some directors, like Bergman and Fellini, hold up very well. Others, like Antonioni and Resnais, don’t. Someone once said that reading the French novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet was like watching paint dry, but watching director Alain Resnais’ 1961 film version of “Last Year at Marienbad,” with screenplay by Robbe-Grillet, is like watching paint dry slowly (very slowly). I remember what a huge event “Last Year at Marienbad” was when it hit campus and art theaters in the early ‘60s. We all went to see it as the last word in cinematic art – but today it seems dull and pretentious. What was all the fuss about? The same can be said of most of the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, who favored real locations and a lackluster pace in such celebrated ‘60s films as “L’Aventura,” “Le’Clisse” and “La Notte.” From today’s perspective, they are pretty dull, rather like the self-indulgent, overlong films of Jacques Rivette in recent years (Rivette’s 4-hour bomb, “La Belle Noiseuse,” could have been cut to two hours just by shortening the preposterously long takes in nearly every scene). The one Antonioni film that does hold up is “Blow Up” (1966), his only British film, in color, with David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave.

Looking good after half a century, are most of the films of Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa and Alfred Hitchcock, among others. The director’s cut of Bergman’s “Fanny and Alexander” is a joy, albeit at five hours. Ranier Fassbinder’s 16-hour “Berlin Alexanderplatz,” from Germany in 1980, holds up well but like many Fassbinder projects, badly needed normal cutting – but the leads, Gunter Lamprecht, Hanna Schygulla, and Barbara Sukowa, are hauntingly good. From France’s New Wave, Truffaut ages well (“The 400 Blows,” “Jules and Jim,” “Shoot the Piano Player”), as does Eric Rohmer (still working today in his ‘80s), whose all-talk trifles, sans music, are still charming and contemporary. Jean-Luc Godard, with his heavy-handed political orientation, does not fare as well. Hitchcock’s “Notorious” (1946), with the incomparable Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, is as good as anything being made today. His “Spellbound,” ‘The Paradine Case,” “Foreign Correspondent,” and “Lifeboat,” all from the forties, are still a pleasure to see.

I expected Facets and Netflix to have a lot of the European and American classics, all the way back to the silent era – and they do, but what I didn’t know is that UNO’s Criss Library has a film collection running probably to a 1,000 titles, including most of the 500 or so in the famous Criterion Collection (Bergman, Dreyer, Welles, Renoir, Fellini, Lang, Kurosawa, Cocteau, Vadim, Eisenstein, of an endless distinguished list), plus two nine-disc boxed sets of Hitchcock, Rossellini’s history films for European TV, entire BBC and PBS series, and much more. Those outside the UNO community can get a yearly library card for $25 and rent films a week at a time. The Criss Library has recently been expanded and improved to the tune of $17 million.

An even bigger surprise is the Omaha Public Library, which has an astounding 30,000 DVDs for rent – free! More than 20,000 are for adults, 8,735 for children, and 1,586 for young adults (“Hannah Montana”). Omaha library cardholders can return these DVDs to any branch and 100 are available in a new “overdrive video” process directly to your PC (John Wayne movies, Abbot & Costello, etc.). Also, CDs and talking books can be downloaded to your iPod or mp3 player or CD. Classic films (Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Rossellini, Fellini, Bergman) are available. Newer ones, like “Benjamin Button,” have a waiting list, but most don’t. Go to omahapubliclibrary.org and use “advanced” search by DVD item type and title, said Collection Development librarian, Judy Anghelescu. You can even recommend new DVD purchases.
