While it’s widely understood that the grand majority of us rarely enjoy what we do day-to-day to make a living, what’s equally rare is finding those who decide to take their passion and turn it into a career. Enter Justin Kadlek, co-founder of Rad Kadillac Productions, a three-year-old concert promotion company, founded in Omaha in 2006. Kadlek, along with co-founders and brothers Nick and Jeff Radil, formed their partnership on a simple concept – find the less-commercially promoted music touring the country and bring it to Omaha. Beginning with the simple desire to bring the artists they wanted to see to the area, Kadlek and his partners have become a large part of why live music in Omaha remains both diverse and nationally respected.
“Many people look at the type of music we promote in the area as niche,” said Kadlek, “but I think in a broad sense, our shows cross all age ranges. It’s not mainstream, but it’s the music we grew up enjoying that brought us together.”
Born from a desire to see the same bands live that inspired them on record, Kadlec and his partners founded their company based on the idea that if enough of them loved these seldom championed artists, collectively, they could drive a new musical market into the city. At the turn of the summer, facing the year’s largest concert season, their supposition seems to be correct.
“We wanted to have fun with it, with promoting these shows,” said Kadlec, “We never went into it, thinking ‘let’s go make a bunch of money.’ We truly loved these bands like we knew others did, and we just wanted to give them a home.”
Rad Kadillac will play host to a number of shows this summer that could well prove to be big draws in the audiophile’s department. Recently, these shows included England’s soul/jazz quartet, the New Mastersounds, and reggae/dub legends Sly & Robbie. As an accomplished duo in their own respect, who also have production credits with artists from Bob Marley to Britney Spears, their recent show at the Slowdown proved to be an impossible place not to get your funk on. This week, Lincoln will play home to Rad Kadillac’s most recent production, as the Bourbon Theater welcomes electric folk/alt-country group Great American Taxi, what some are describing at a Grateful Dead of the new generation.
Highlighting Rad Kadillac’s summer concert series is a visit from arguably one of the most eclectic musicians in the past 25 years: Les Claypool, with O’ Death at the Anchor Inn on July 2. The former Primus front man-turned-singer/songwriter will be making waves on the shore this coming holiday weekend, and will be sure to attract metalheads, jam banders and funk aficionados alike.
“[His show] will be a fun little freak show down by the river,” said Kadlek, “He hits so many genres, and draws so many different types of people, it’s sure to be a great night.”
Likewise, as Kadlec wants his company to be known as a home for eclectic and all-welcoming live acts who rarely ever play the same set twice, so too does he want to be known for a professional respect for the artists on the road, searching for that elusive audience that finds their style of music an exercise in art over commerce.
“We understand what it’s like to be out on the road for months at a time,” said Kadlec, “We really try to go the extra mile with their shows so that [the artists] remember us. Like any business, it’s about building relationships, but if we take that extra step with [artists], they tend to give that much more in their performances. It’s a win/win.”
And much like any business, Kadlec is quick to point out his potential road blocks: namely, getting people to commit to a live show for a band they may not have had a lengthy time investigating, or, as Kadlec put it, “getting people to try something a little out of their box.” Kadlec, however, sees the potential for success in many challenges.
“When you see someone who stepped outside, who took a chance, and you see them smile, that’s my biggest reward in this business.”
