Style: Bellwether Weathers a Storm
Old Market boutique is looking to move, not close

If vintage and local design lovers have heard the rumor that the Old Market’s Bellwether Boutique is closing, they shouldn’t worry – it isn’t true. Not quite, at least.
The shop, which celebrated its one-year anniversary in June, is merely moving from its current location at the corner of 12th and Howard streets to another. Exactly where and when are still up the air.
“The owner is renovating the whole building, and the rent’s going up,” Jessica Latham said of the store’s current basement location. Delice occupied the building’s street-level space until last week, when it closed after being in business for 21 years. WheatFields Express is slated to open there in August.
Latham said she’s paying month-to-month rent and will receive 30 days notice once Bellwether’s space has been re-rented.
“I’m working on planning a location as soon as I can so I can be prepared,” she said. “There are a couple spots I’ve been considering (in the Old Market).”
Latham said she’d ideally like to move a few months before or a few months after Omaha Fashion Week, slated this year Sept. 15-19, but ideally before winter.
Keeping Bellwether downtown is important to Latham.
“I feel like there’s a lot of West moving East – west Omaha chains here like Stokes, Wheatfields, Famous Dave’s,” she said. “It’s like you can’t survive down here unless you have a chain or something big to work with. The whole bohemian kind of vibe that makes the Old Market so attractive and authentic is kind of being bought out.
“I want to keep my town the way I think it should be,” she said. “I just want to stay a part of the community.”
And – perhaps in spite of its low-profile presence – in the year since Bellwether has opened, featuring a well-edited 1920s to 1980s vintage clothing selection and art gallery and providing local designers an unprecedented platform to sell their wares, it’s been well-received. So much so, the customers, Latham said, really shaped Bellwether’s direction.
“The shop has totally made itself what it is,” she said. “Those (initial) ideas get washed away when the community comes in and understands what they want down to the décor and what I carry. It’s one of those situations where you don’t anticipate the support you’ll get.”
News of the shop’s events – largely group gallery and fashion shows – is passed mainly by word-of-mouth and fliers.
“We need that kind of love to survive,” Latham said.
She plans to continue Bellwether’s core focus in the new location, wherever that might be: vintage clothing, an art gallery and local designers. She’d like to include antique furniture and locally made housewares, space permitting, but at first, she’s just excited to feel out a new location and “see how the relationship goes with Bellwether’s intents,” she said.
And it will also, Latham hopes, provide a few basic elements she’d been craving.
“It’ll be nice to have windows,” she said. “I dream of a storefront.”
