Meeting the Band: Matt Whipkey

Matt Whipkey gets back to his solo roots

By now a long withstanding figure in Omaha’s local music community, singer-songwriter Matt Whipkey has done it all. As front man: he’s led romp and stomp alt-rock groups like the Movies, Anonymous American and the trimmed down but nonetheless just as powerful trio the Whipkey Three. As support man: he’s found a niche for himself as the prowling lead guitarist in another local group that’s made waves in recent months – Brad Hoshaw & the Seven Deadlies. As solo artist: he began his career on local stages and at open mike nights as a teenager like so many others – with a guitar in his hands and a cleft running through his heart.

Now he’s back to his solo roots, and is doing more than ever by himself: writing, recording and mixing an album. For his first solo full-length, the nine tracks on his new disc “Instant Heart,” he employed the use of his trusty Tascam 424 MkII 4-track machine, recording directly to cassette tape. The songs were then was mixed down to DAT tape, an almost archaic technology by today’s digital standards. He then took his baby to Focus Mastering to have Doug Van Sloun work his magic and, according to Whipkey, a friend in Minneapolis helped design and hand silkscreen the initial pressing, which will be put out by local bedroom label Slo-Fi Records.

The disc itself finds Whipkey dealing with broken relationships and the drawn out loneliness one might feel when unable to find anywhere to fit in (see especially the closer “No Place In This World,” an up tempo rocker that reveals Whipkey’s subject isolated and alone, propped up and animated by soaring, well-placed harmonica wails). Whipkey admitted that he was working under the influence of the songwriting of Dylan and Springsteen, especially taking into account the latter’s four-track masterpiece of an album, “Nebraska.”
Over a drink or two at the Barley Street, Whipkey was obviously very proud of his latest album and was eager to show off the finished product – each of which comes with a one-of-kind Polaroid picture made into a sleeve for the liner notes – to his friends at the bar. He also said that his CD release party next Saturday at the Waiting Room features a special reunion of his former band Anonymous American.

Can you take me through your new album from conception, to recording it, to the finished product?
Matt: I really liked the idea of the Slo-Fi label. I think I was here for that (local band) Underwater Dream Machine CD release party, and I really just dug the whole idea. Because the Whipkey Three’s last record did a lot, like, it was all hand stamped and handmade and I really like that aesthetic of it. Frankly, when I get the thousands (of discs), every CD almost sells a little less physical copies. That’s just the trend with the industry. So, I like the idea of making it special, having a limited run kind of a unique packaging thing and just kind of the homemade music aspect of it.

I’ve always recorded at home, did most for the band whether they’d be done on 4-track or handheld recorder, Garage Band, I had amassed all these different songs. So, I selected like 12 of them and put them together and gave Kyle (Harvey, head of Slo-Fi) a CD and that was going to be the record. I kind of gave a few to some other friends whose opinions I trust musically, and my buddy Nick Neary, who did all the packaging, said he really liked the more acoustic songs on it, this thing, because there was some rock songs on it, too.

I had the 4-track laying around. I always wanted to focus and do something in that medium. So I re-cut two of the songs in one night and I sent him (Neary) mp3s of those, and he’s like, “Yeah, man, that’s it, that’s the sound, the direction to go with it.” From there, I just kind of went the whole way; I kind of re-cut everything with the idea that it would be released.
That all took place between March and April. I cut nine songs and it felt pretty complete. Some of them are new songs, some have been around.

Were there any songs you recorded that didn’t make the final cut?
Matt: I had a few more I thought about doing, but it felt pretty complete the way it was – nine songs, 32 minutes. This last year, I’ve really been into the idea of the 30-minute record for some reason.

Four-track recordings are interesting because things aren’t going to be real smooth or real perfect…
Matt: I spent awhile with the takes, but what’s cool about the 4-track thing is all the lead guitar parts are recorded from start to finish, whereas in the studio you can comp it, can edit it digitally. Digitally you can punch in two notes, but I mean on these tape machines you can’t narrow it down that close. You need a good second-and-a-half of just space before you make a punch or otherwise you’re going to screw it all up.

A lot of the songs are kind of about lost love, or moving on from a relationship.
Matt: They’re not love songs. They’re kind of heartbreak songs. But for the most part, every one of these concerns a human relationship of sorts, whether it be a current relationship, a former relationship or even just friends. It’s definitely about relationships, but not necessarily heading in the most positive direction on most of those…

How’d you come up with the album name, “Instant Heart”?
Matt: It came to mind, the whole Polaroid theme has something to do with it, but the idea with the photos with the album, the 4-track, I was kind of just exploring these old mediums of technology. Like with a 4-track, you can do it yourself. With a Polaroid, boom, it’s right there.

What are your origins playing music?
Matt: I got a guitar in 1994. I was in 8th grade. I took guitar lessons for about a year and a half. Pretty much learned how to play a barely substantial portion of the Nirvana catalogue. I think a lot of people my age would say Nirvana had an impact on them, but that made me want to play the guitar. I felt like watching them that I could play guitar. That’s a really cool legacy to have – to make other people feel like they could do it… From there it kind of opened the gates to a lot of things. The kind of music on this (new album) is probably more of my Dylan and Springsteen obsessions.

Did you ever feel like you were making your own “Nebraska”?
Matt: I figure people make that comparison, especially if people know. It’s probably my first or second favorite record ever. I love it. That’s a big part of this sound, you know, people go for a certain sound when they make a record. I mean I drove to Cleveland to look at the 4-track machine he made “Nebraska” on. It was part of their big Springsteen exhibit. It was awesome.

Do you have a favorite track on your new disc?
Matt: I had a lot tunes to pick from to record in this way. I felt really sincere about all of them at the time, and I still do. I like “Over Easy” a lot, “Ronny (From Albuquerque),” “Something to Sing” was fun. That wrote itself in 10 minutes one night. I spent a lot time on each one. I like them all.

You also play lead guitar with Brad Hoshaw & the Seven Deadlies. Are you totally dedicated to that band?
Matt: Pretty much. We’re going out on tour for two, three weeks in October. That will leave me broke for a while. I like his music and I get to focus on guitar playing, which I do every day as a job, but it’s fun to show that side of my personality.

Is it almost easier for you, because the pressure isn’t all on you?
Matt: No, I get more nervous before his gigs than I ever will before my own. For some reason, maybe just because I wrote the songs like I don’t feel nervous about it, like if it’s mine to screw up. But his music isn’t mine to screw up. It’s his. I try to do my best to respect his music.

Matt: I think musicians should stop giving it away. My big thing this year is kind of noticing frankly how taken advantage of people take musicians for and we gladly play along with it. I came up with a good analogy for it. I want to go to a Ford dealer and tell them that they should give me their Ford car for free because of all the people that will see me driving that Ford car. I’m going to drive to work, to dinner – I’m going to take it out at night. I’m going to be seen by thousands of cars every day in a Ford car. That’s really great exposure for Ford. I don’t see why I should have to pay for that car.

What else is in store for your CD release show?
Matt: I think some shirts might come off, but I don’t want to say whose, or when. But some shirts could come off – on men. Out of shape shirtless guys. That’s rock ‘n’ roll.
