Former Omaha radio talk-show host Chris Baker, now with news-talk KTLK-FM in Minneapolis, made comments on his show last week that have struck a nerve with former NBA great Magic Johnson.
During his 7-11 a.m. show last Wednesday, Baker and co-host Landgon Perry accused Johnson of faking AIDS.
After Johnson condemned the statements, the station said it regretted “some offhand remarks” by Baker and Perry, according to an Associated Press report.
“I am outraged that Chris Baker and Langdon Perry would minimize such a serious and deadly issue,” Johnson said.
“We can't have people out here making false statements and putting out bad information, because this battle is too big when it comes to HIV and AIDS. I poured my life into it and a lot of other people have poured their life into it, into getting out the right information so people can protect themselves and know what HIV and AIDS is all about.”
According to a partial transcript reported by the AP, the conversation went like this, after Perry referred to diseases that are treatable with the proper drugs:
Baker said, “Like Magic Johnson?”
Perry replied, “Like Magic with his faked AIDS. Magic faked AIDS.”
Baker said, “You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?”
Perry replied, “I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.”
“Me, too,” Baker said.
Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991.
Omahans will remember Baker from his stints as morning show host on the now-defunct Edge radio station, as well as his run as talk-show host on KKAR (1290 AM).
After Omaha, Baker took a gig as talk-show host at Houston’s KTRH and KPRC. Last year, Baker moved to Minneapolis to work the 7-11 a.m. shift at KTLK.
You can hear Baker’s show live each day via the Web at KTLKfm.com.
At the station’s Web site, Baker describes himself as such: “I am an independent conservative with three small children and a wife who I love more than anything I could have ever imagine.
“Politically I don't see one qualified person running for the office of President nor do I think that it matters at this point. I see politicians as nothing more than puppets and gangsters and that is regardless of party. Mexico owns this election. The candidates I supported were Fred Thompson and Ron Paul.”

WOWT - Most Watched News Station
Most likely WOWT can say it is the "the heartland's most watched news station" because of the newscast reruns on Cox Channel 1. If you add up all the people who watch the Channel 1 reruns of, say, the 10 pm newscast that run from 10:30 pm until 5 am, and add those viewers to the ratings of the live 10 pm broadcast, you most likely have more viewers than watch the KETV 10 pm news live.
In other words, "most watched" because it's on 24 hours a day.

World Herald layoffs
Yeah, and to listen to the OWH publisher say that . . . "We will continue to provide a complete report of news and events happening in the Midlands, or that have an effect on the Midlands, or stuff that's just plain interesting" is a crock. When you remove newsroom jobs, of which there will be 10 from what I hear, your coverage inevitably will be worse. Not to mention the accuracy and cleanliness of copy you lose when you layoff copy editors. It's a sad day for people who have given their careers to the newspaper business. Thanks OWH.

WOWT NEW SET
Since no one else has mentioned it...What's up with the new set at WOWT?? It looke like they hurried up to get it finished and forgot to up the background! They must have had some left over blue paint or something. Why in the opening do they say "the heartland's most watched news station" I thought KETV was number in ratings?? Who knows what Blondie and The Smirk will come up with next??.....
